Just what potential donors should ask before they support any mid day meal program:
- There is a clause in the in the final guidelines document entitled National Program for Nutritional Supply for Primary Education , 2006 ( Mid-Day Meal Scheme) section 3.9.1 Assignment of supply Responsibilites to voluntary organizations.
- Take a close look a the costings and claims being made regarding cost of operations, overheads and try to arrive at an estimate of the cost of the meal per child. Don’t make the mistake of going by the claims of Akshaya Patra. ( Satyam fiasco is avery good example why we cant take any claims, especially when an US based Multinational audit fiem is involved in the picture.)
- Compare cost figures with those of other NGOs before you make an offering. There is no point in regretting that you too have become a victim of fraud and deception.
- If you wish to actually offer support to the Mid day meal program, it is better to discuss with the local school and make direct donations in kind. Several organistions are switching to this mode of rendering service rather than using middle men or NGOs with questionable reputation.
